c needs of each industry and application. Electromagnetic Sensors Electromagnetic sensors are also known as Magnetic Pick ups ( MPU) and variable reluctance sensors. Some people call them active sensors because they generate a voltage, others know them as passive sensors because they do not require an auxiliary power supply. A Jaquet DSE series electromagnetic sensor essentially consists of an iron core around which sits an inductive coil and behind which sits a permanent magnet. A ferromagnetic pole wheel passing the front face of the sensor influences the magnetic field in the coil thus inducing an a.c. voltage. The performance of a DSE series sensor in a given application is dependent upon numerous factors. This application note discusses the various considerations for selecting and using Jaquet electromagnetic sensors and should be read in conjunction with the sensor data sheet.
